The Wales & West Of England Pug Dog Club is one of five Pug breed clubs in the UK. It was formed in 1987 when a group of Pug enthusiasts exhibiting at the Toydog Society Of Wales Open show informally discussed the setting up of a Welsh Pug dog club. A year later the Club was recognised and approved by the Kennel Club and was to be called The Wales & West Of England Pug Dog Club. In January 1989, the first show – a twelve class Open Show was held at Chepstow Drill Hall.
Two Open shows were held annually up until 1993 – one in Wales & the other in the West Of England. After being granted Championship Status In 1994 the Club held its first Championship Show at the Usk College of Agriculture where the judge was Mrs Ferelith Somerfield. We continue to hold two shows a year – the Open Show at Charfield Memorial Hall in January and the Championship show at the Usk College of Agriculture in June.
The Club consists of a Patron, President, Vice Presidents, Honorary Life Members, Chairperson, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer and a Committee of up to 14 members.
The Club’s objectives are to promote the quality and well being of the breed, and to encourage and advise Owners & Breeders to adopt the Kennel Club’s Code of Ethics, the Kennel Club’s Breed Standard, and the Club’s General Code of Ethics & Guidelines.
Ann Lewis
Two members of the committee represent the Club on the Pug Breed Council, which compiles and approves the judges lists & two others on the newly formed Health Sub Committee.
The Club also incorporates a very active Pug Dog Rescue scheme with representatives covering all of Wales and the West of England.
The Club continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the continuing support of its members and exhibitors alike, while not forgetting the hard work and dedication of the Officers and Committee.
